Excel 2007 - Which File Format is Best?
You may already know that Excel 2007 has completely changed its interface and menu structure. It is one of the biggest changes in any previous version. However, It is likely to cause you some frustration if you are upgrading from any other version. This is because the ribbon and menu structure have changed. Where you think a command is likely to be will be moved somewhere else. There are also new file formats. It is not just .xls any more, there are the new .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, and .xlam file types.
Which should I use?
The .xlsformat was very restrictive for developers when creating third party software. The new .xlsm file format is much more capable. The entire spreadsheet is saved as a series of text-based XML files which are zipped to save space. As a zip file (if renamed with .zip extention) you don't need excel in order to use the file.
Security issues have increased with these new file formats that guarantees that there will be no macros inside your file. The .xlsx file format is the same as .xlsm but deletes any macros in the file. If you don't use macros, then you will manage fine with .xlsx format. xlam is the format for Excel add-ins.
Can i use previous versions?
In any case, the new 2007 version does have a compatibility mode, so you can view just about any version. You can always use the Save As command to save an Excel 2007 file as an Excel 97-2003 file format. Excel actually support many different file formats.
If you really don't like the new look of excel 2007, there are add-ins that change it back to the layout of excel 2003. There are many new and advanced features in the new version that it is worth starting to use it. You will need time to play about with the new version to get used to the new layout.
